I've been in my new job for the about a month now and it has been and is great! I'm loving everything about it. There is some readjustment going on within me, with my art and my creativity. There is definitively a sense of balance that is going on and that has flowed into many other areas of my life. I'm just taking some time to see where and how my art fits in....

Having said that, The Cottage Industry Exhibition at Warwick was an amazing experience. Loretta is such a sweet lady and was such a gracious host. Huge thanks and hugs to you Rett for your warm hospitality. And to my workshop ladies, thank you for allowing me to push you outside your creative zone. I had a ball, hope you did too.

Colourful News

On Friday I head off to Warwick to be part of the Cottage Industry Exhibition with some delightful ladies who are most talented! Can't wait to met the gals in person and I'm so excited to be holding a journaling workshop "Fashion Your Journal" on Saturday in conjunction with the exhibition...I'm preparing some pages and notes for the workshop and thrilled how this has poured out onto the page with pencil, ink and stitching. Truly great inspiration and techniques in this workshop. If you're local to the Warwick area and would like to come along please contact the Warwick Art Gallery.

My Open Studio was amazing with loads of friends, both new and old coming for a browse. There was a bit of a buying frenzy over a couple of pieces but every one loved what they took home. Huge thanks to Maryse who traveled a number of hours to come up and spend a few days in Hervey Bay. A magical soul who I met a few years ago at a Melbourne Art Retreat. Anyway I've had a few requests to do another Open Studio before Xmas. I shall keep you posted on that one as I'm well aware that December is such a busy social time for us all.

And some more news to date... I've started working a few days a week in a beautiful local shoe and accessory boutique. Oh, truly it is divine. I love getting dressed up and going to work to be surrounded by beautiful feminine things and fabulous team to work with. Feels like heaven. So my family and I've all been adjusting to a new routine...but all is well.

Emerge Art Workshop

Another great event + space to share with you!

Emerge is an online place where Australian artists starting out in their journey can promote and sell their work. And there are opportunities to have your art promoted to galleries. Brilliant!! Founding director Chantel Schott is a motivated artist who has a big vision to assist other artists, and a big heart to go with it.

February 2012, the Repertory Threatre, Toowoomba, shall host an exhibition to showcase these emerging artists. Myself and Kym Breeze are teaching weekend workshops to coincide with the exhibition. I am so excited about this event....if I can pass on helpful information throughout my workshop that can make a difference to an artist starting out, then I'm one happy camper!

I remember when I started painting and exhibiting, I had so many questions, but very few people to ask...so this is a great event for many reasons!

Rouched, beaded and Brooched

This pic was in Vogue September 2011. Loved the brooch and tie combo, just my thing at the moment. I felt inspired by this beautifully strong image, but I put my own twist on it.As I always love to do.

It was one of those designs that just happened on its own. And I love it.This tie is a magical mix of blue shot with green. The perfect accent to wear with pink! The gathers are secured with beading and can be worn on either the right or the left. Got to be versatile...

Another twist, with a more feminine rosette look, balanced with a small peeping tie end. A beautifully brocaded fabric.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, if you feel you are fearless enough in your fashion sense to wear a men's tie, rouched, beaded and brooched....

It's going to be a great exhibition and I'd love to see you there. In conjunction with this exhibition... I'm teaching a journaling workshop at the Gallery, themed around fashion and textiles. my 11yr old gave me a pedi!

Living and functioning successfully in a creative home can be challenging.Where mum is feeling creatively inspired, the kids need help with homework and its time for the evening meal to prepare, not to mention washing needs to come in off the line and and and...

That was me. I was a very spontaneous cook and the evening would draw to a quick close and I'd have nothing in mind to cook.We'd end up having late dinner and then everyone was too tired to help with the dishes and then it would roll on to the next day. ugh..

Until I found this book. It jumped out at me at the local library.And truly it has helped me change things around here. Yep a little miracle. And i was ready too.

Planning with kids was written my an Aussie mum Nicole Avery, who has 5 kids. Check out her blog. She shares many pearls of wisdom, that I have found so helpful...

I am now menu planning for the week and this helps with the grocery list. Meals are hassle free as I always have the ingredients and dinner is early so everyone helps clean up.Heaven!

Who would have thought that being organized could be so simple? I'd recommend this one for any creative with family.

Upcycled Fascinators

Much time spent in the studio, creating these pieces. They are now proudly in a local shop, Frangipanni Footwear & Accessories, ready for race day or a special occasion. Loved using a variety of textures, combining colours and design elements from my treasure trove.Like creating a beautiful feminine mixed media collage in 3D.

Now I am gathering myself for the next exciting art project on my books and our 11 yr old birthday party tomorrow. Life is never dull here.

Learning how to Wholesale

Lia from Outsource Marketing

Earlier this week I had THE MOST amazing phone consultation with Lia from Outsource marketing about wholesaling. I'm aware that its a whole other side of business that I know very little about and I admit not very confident in either...

In particular I wanted to learn how to be successful in cold calling on businesses. How to introducing myself into a business that I want to sell to... Lia was able to shed much light. Advising me on what to say, how and when. Now its only been a few days, but I've already put what I've learnt into practice and I've been crazily successful. Most of all I gained the courage to talk up and sell what I'm creating. And now I've got the hang of it, I've got the confidence of knowing what to do, its becoming easier.

There is now a local business stocking my fascinators and interested in other lines that are still in the design stage.And then some more.... Yay!

I can highly recommend Lia's "Learn to Wholesale" consultations. She covers many topics from branding, pricing, pro's + con's of agents & distributors, and so much more. Have a look here for more info.

Sunsets on the good stuff

Why do we let the sun go down on the things that are good for us? A question I've been asking myself the last few days. I know what works for me, what makes me feel good, what feeds my body and my creative soul, but sometimes I allow that to slip by. Through tiredness, through being there for everyone else, resistance and just because things in life happen.

I'm making a conscious effort to pull all things back into my day that I know my soul benefits from.Chi Gong, Pilates, eating more fruit, connecting more with friends, painting and journaling...

I feel like its been forever since I journaled in a visual way. I know on all levels that this feeds my soul. I'm pledging to myself that I am worth looking after and I deserve to be living the best life I can be.

I'm also acknowledging that life happens. and it's all ok.

OMGosh! aren't these THE most beautiful eco decor you've ever seen. I certainly think so!! these divine cushions are made by the very talented Angie and can be found at that funky boutique etsy. 'Each one is a one of a kind sewn from recycled felted wool &/or cashmere sweater knits.' that's so clever, I can just imagine snuggling into this tactile rainbow.

Truly I'm in love with anything that's eco, recycled or reused AND beautiful. These most definitely are. Call me superficial if you may, but paper bag brown eco just doesn't do it for me...and why should it when there are beautiful choices like Angie's delightful cushions.

Saturday I packed up my floral collection of fashion accessories and presented them to a group of gorgeous fun loving women. We had loads of laughs, some pink bubbles, delicious nibbles and much talk about fashion, style and how to wear it all...with confidence.

Yesterday I felt inspired to wear this men's tie. I've been collecting a number of them to make my flourish accessory designs. I'd put this one aside, feeling it had a special somethin' somethin'.

It brought up memories of my Grandpa. He was such a gentleman. In his winter years he would still wear a tie when we came to visit, even if it was with his checked flannelette shirt. I found this completely endearing.

I paired it up with some favourites from my wardrobe. My fabulous white winkle pickers. Bought these a few years ago, at a sale on the way to do my tax at the accountants.....as you do!

A vintage pin that makes a perfect tie pin, and my newby bag. An op shop find for $4. I love it. It's the perfect size for my goodies and it fits over my shoulder and under my arm with so much comfort. And I have my hands free without it slipping off.

So tell me. Have you been brave and worn something a little outside your comfort zone lately? I felt a little stretched wearing this tie out, but it felt so right. So I decided to wear it with confidence cos I loved it!

finding joy

Loads of pics being taken here today and it turned out to be so much fun. Truly I wasn't looking forward to photographing the pieces I've been making. As each one is a 'one of a Kind' I knew they deserved a number of individual pics to capture their essence. After taking some shots I found my formula and I found the joy in it too.

It was just like dressing up! I've used lots of clothing from my own wardrobe...and I love all of them dearly, either vintage finds or just absolute favourites. The jewellery too. Vintage finds, hand-me-downs, family heirlooms (treasures I've loved and no one else wants) or pieces I've made.I do so love everything in my wardrobe and jewellery box.I recently went through all my clothes and passed on anything that didn't feel right anymore.

Now to upload to my website. Shall keep you posted.There will be some yummy things to enjoy in my shop.

the right path

I've been thinking all week about what to share with you. The pieces I'm creating are so new and developing that they need time to take root.Like any newly planted seed there is a huge amount of nurturing, effort and time that is needed for this tiny seed to start its growth....

so whilst I don't have any pics to share with you yet, I do have some heart encouraging experience to share.

I now know what it feels like to be on the right path. the things I've jotted down, the goals + dreams I'm envisaging are starting to twinkle with possibility. every time even the slightest doubt pops up, some form of confirmation heads my way. My dear arty friend Anna always said to me "Your style finds you". I never really got that until now. I just had to be quite enough to listen and patient enough for it to come to me.

it feels amazing.

I may not be posting here as often as I have in the past. But I'm busy in the studio and I shall have beautiful things to share. its going to be worth the wait....

I've been out of any type of social connection for the last few weeks and I'm so grateful to have my good health return. I have vowed + declared I shall never take my body for granted again!

But there is always a silver lining.... whilst I was sick I spent time in front of the computer, looking through mags and watching fashion on tv. and it totally inspired me. Looking back I can see that this was the only way I would actually stop and listen to my inner voice... and it spoke to me loud and clear.

It was like a download of information.

I got images of the products, ideas on how to market it, what the packaging looks like...the whole kit + caboodle. except the 'how to' make these goodies, I guess there are somethings I need to nut out myself.

so what can I say other than, watch this space! I shall practice bravery by following these messages without doubt.

There will be newness, some changes but as always, great arty pieces. It definitively feels like a new beginning. But it all fits with what I'm already creating, like a common thread, its pulling it all together.

I had some girly time recently and watched Burlesque and throughly enjoyed it.I loved the costumes and generally felt entertained. I'm a Cher fan and I loved Moulin Rogue so I figured I'd enjoy this one.And lets face it there is nothing like escaping into some sequins and stilettos for a while...

After this visual feast of textures and glamor I felt totally inspired and surfed the web until I found Bibian Blue, fashion designer from Barcelona...edgy, feminine and a little burlesque.

Story Inspired by the Kindred Project

Flash back to 1985. I'm in my last year of high school and I'm doing a photo shoot for my final Textile project.Its about undergarments making a fashion statement. Madonna + Cyndi Lauper are topping the charts and its all about the corset look....

it was an amazing year with an inspiring teacher.

Encouragement, validation and acceptance for my creativity and myself, is what I found in my Textile teacher. She stretched me and my ideas and challenged me to be more than I thought I ever could. She believed in me and I felt alive and awake, thriving in her presence. It was a time I believed in the possibility of everything and that everything was possible. That year I topped the state with my final year marks for Textiles.

The upside of this amazing year was a feeling of being filled and fulfilled, blissful in a time where I really needed to believe in myself and my direction … I was 17 and I felt I could do anything in the creative world.

However the Universe had some tough love lessons for me..

Since then, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find that full feeling of external validation for who I am and my creativity. Universal experience has been a firm handed teacher with many life lessons over the years. Looking back I can see how reliant I was comments from others about my art and how this shaped my direction, trying to seek their approval and acceptance for validation.

Finally I came to the realization that I’m not able to gain that fullness of validation from any other individual: not my parents, nor my partner, not my children, friends, university lecturers, clients or even strangers. I now know that relying on external validation is a gamble at best. True validation is definitely an inside job! It comes from doing the work, refining my skills, knowing I am doing the best I can at the time, with no comparisons to anyone else and telling myself “Well Done”. It’s a way I can fill my heart regardless of anyone’s opinion.

Truly I am grateful for what I learnt about myself in that year. My kind hearted teacher gave me a kick start in a life lesson about self validation. I got to feel how amazing validation is at its fullest, what huge achievements I can reach when I believe in myself and what I’m creating, and what happens when I stretch beyond what I think I can do. Thank you KB, you gave me a wonderful gift.

Dearest Oprah,

It is true that you have kept me company in my art studio over the years. Listening and watching whilst drawing, gluing and painting. There was no better way for me to fill my soul. This was when I felt the connection to my best Self.

There were days when your knowledge and wisdom gave me exactly what I needed to unlock the next part of my journey. Truly, synchronicity at its best. You gave me confirmation I was on the ‘right’ track, the tools and the words to help me become the person I dream I can be.

Whilst watching your last show it did indeed feel like you were sitting in my lounge room, telling me I have an important job to do and that I need to get on with it. That my dream is worth pursuing ….because I am worth it.

Deep within my heart I know I have something special to share, a purpose beyond my own. Through my art I see others connecting to the best part of themselves…

My vision for my art is for it to reach deep inside of someone, to awaken a part of them. To connect with that special something rising inside. A heartfelt connection. It might be a feeling of being loved, a special memory returns or inspiration to make some changes in their life. Maybe it’s about just feeling so damn good about who they are that they want to keep looking, feeling…

Thank you for encouraging me to be my true soul filled self. This is who I was meant to be. And thank you for always being there when I needed you most, with the words I most needed to hear…like a true friend holding my hand, telling me “Yes, you can”.

Oprah, thank you for being all that you can be….you inspire me to be all that I can be. Truly.

6 Degrees Separation. Interview with Jen Crossley

The theory of Six degrees of separation has always intrigued me, knowing we are all connected to each other through people we know and through the Universe, gives me goosebumps, in a good way. As Wiki explains

"everyone is on average approximately six steps away from any other person on Earth, so that a chain of, "a friend of a friend" statements can be made, on average, to connect any two people in six steps or fewer". ...

and I'm inspired to share with you some of the connections I've made with amazing artesian's, learning how they stay connected to who they are, their craft and their creative community .

And with out further a due, let me introduce you to a fun loving, creative woman who I met briefly a few years ago, Jen Crossley. Jen's the type of gal who I felt immediately at ease with, she has a huge open heart and a fabulous sense of humor!

Jen Crossley ~ A Mark in Time

How did your creative story begin?

I was only very young when I started to create. My mum used to belong to the CWA (country women’s association) so she was always making things. That’s when I started to sew a lot at the start, then it just took off from there.

How did you come to be creating the art that you are?

I have always love paper and metal I loved combining the two in pieces of art. I honed my skills with metal and moved onto a lot more metal work jewelry and books etc. I love using found objects in my work.

I love that you create with recycled elements, how do you go about sourcing these?

I love found objects, I mainly source these objects at Antique shops, Flea markets, swap meets. I'm always on the look out for that one piece.

How do know when a “find” has the potential to be something more?

It's a feeling when I find that piece it just stands out to me I have to have it. Sometimes it might be a object that I can put a picture in it, I never pay big money for them, they are usually someones junk, my treasure.

You live in Central Victoria, Australia. How do you stay connected with your creative community?

I have no arty friends where I live, an artist waste land. I always joke about it. I travel to Melbourne a lot so I try and catch up with my arty friends when I can. I also travel to teach Brisbane and Perth so I keep in contact with my friends when I teach. I have made lots of wonderful friends when I travel, we all share a passion of art. I also keep in contact on line with Blogs and facebook. My main friends are Arty People.

What motivates you to create your art?

I just find I need to create for my own piece of mind. If I haven’t created for awhile I get unsettled. I make Art for me. It helps me relax , unwind and escape for a little while.

I'm so thrilled to finally reach this goal. In my art life it has been a dream for such along time. I would love to do a book one day, but we will see. I just want to share my knowledge with others, that’s what it is all about, sharing what you love.

What or who has inspired you in your creative journey?

In my early years I must say my mum did inspire me, as the years went on, a lot of my arty friends inspired me.Julie Van Oosten for my love of paper, Christine Atkins really inspires me to try even harder in my art and Linda Lynch inspire me in Life and art.

I have had the opportunity to take some amazing classes with American tutors who have travelled to Australia over the last 3 years. I have honed my skills and feel more confident thanks to, Keith Lobue, Susan Lenart Kazmer, Robert Danick, Stephanie Lee , Nina Bagley, Michael De Mang and Mary Hettsmansperger.

What, if any challenges do you find living + creating in Australia?

This is a great question. Where I live it’s so hard to get supplies, so I go to Melbourne to find some supplies. I get so frustrated when I can’t get a certain products or tool. The internet has opened up a whole world of obtaining these items now. But I usually want them yesterday LOL.

And a little more about Jen...

Jen lives in Miners Rest, a small country town in Victoria, Australia.She's been married to Mark for twenty-six years. They have two wonderful children Nicole and Matthew.

Jen has no official degrees in the art field. She's mainly a self-taught mixed media artist. When she first started, she was interested in paper art, vintage styles (of course), and the love of metal and paper. Combining the two together became an obsession. Naturally the next step was jewerly, but Jen still combines the paper elements that she loves.

Jen's been published in many Australian paper arts magazines and published several times in Somerset Studio and Belle Armoire Jewerly and she's been teaching her art for over twenty years now, travelling through out Australia.

The Sketch Book Project is a global calling for artists to journal their hearts out and then to be part of a traveling exhibit in the US, UK and drum role please....Australia.

You'll find all the deets on their website. I just received my journal, it's smaller than what I'm used to creating in, both size of pages and the amount. But that can only be a good thing!

So what do you do with all those filled journals? Mine are stacked on my bookshelf once I feel they are full. And sometimes that's not about coming to the end of the journal pages. It may just be time to move on to the next. Another chapter ready to start.

I love the concept of repurposing. Everything has a purpose, I believe many purposes if you look deep enough. My art journals are no exceptions... from creative discoveries, trying new design ideas, emotional outpourings and inspired uplifting. Yep its all there between those lusious covers and crumpled, painterly edges. From time to time I'll flip through my old journals, see how far I've travelled + achieved, both creatively and personally.

or I'll just set a page up on a little easel to encourage some positive flow.

Some of my most favorite things I own, I've bought from Op shops (thrift shops). This is my all time best handbag ever! Its a hand crotchet bag with a yellow lining. Bought it for $5! and the handles are removable so I through it in the wash from time to time. I love that someone else has made it...

And here is my other fav handbag from an Op shop. This wasn't second hand, but it was so quirky I feel in love with it as soon as I saw it. and for $13 I couldn't say no. It's made from a cane like weaving, sequins on the handles and organza flowers.

whilst I few flowers have popped off, I love it!

Shopping in vintage and thrift stores is definitely like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get! But they can be as sweet as ever.....

Sometimes when I sign up for things I get more than what I bargained for…yep that’s the way the Universe intended it to be, I’m sure! So here’s a little reflection…

When I signed up to do Kelly Rae’s Flying Lessons last year I thought I’d be learning about my arty biz. And I did, but I also learnt SO much about myself.

Kelly Rae’s words of wisdom shone a light onto my creative biz and I got to see clearly where the ‘holes’ were in my artsy biz dream. I also got to see where the holes where in me. I’d been giving myself messages that my art wasn’t good enough, or it wasn’t quite the ‘right’ art or maybe I should be making that seems to be selling, maybe, maybe, maybe…. many, many self defeating, thoughts. I felt I wasn’t making the progress that I so deeply felt in my heart.

In actual fact it was not my creativity at fault…. the other components in my art biz were unbalanced ….simply. I was unaware.

Since then I’ve been looking into the ‘holes’ to make changes. I’ve began creating art that is authentic to me. Going back to basics of creating art that makes me feel good about who I am. Now I’ve got a plan as what to do and how to do it. And that makes me feel courageous and brave in my steps.

I have a slightly more realistic biz vision and I know that my art is worthy, that what I have to contribute is valuable and my internal compass is heading North to my dream. With the some more biz knowledge in hand, more self belief and self validation, my tool box is filled with practical steps. I feel authentic and courageous. To me this is immeasurable success.

there are some days I look back on and think 'what did I do today?'...or a friend/family will ask 'so what have you been up to?' and I have to admit there are times I just draw a blank... not because I haven't been doing anything, just because I can't recall my creative going ons! Unless its a big project, there nothing in my brain space that comes up and its so easy to get distracted with what my children are doing, that the conversations usually turn to their achievements. time for a change.

after an inspired chat with my hubby, he told me just before he goes to sleep he thinks about all the things he's built in the past. he's a cabinetmaker by trade. what a brilliant idea! nothing like going to sleep feeling a sense of achievement.

its time for me to acknowledge what I achieve. A little creative doodling has come into play. as I complete a task or at the end of the day I write in a flower bubble in my diary. so I actually have it in writing that I am achieving. they may only be small things but its an achievement and it all counts.

I played a game of tennis for the first time in over 13 yrs last week...that definetly counts!

Loving the unknown

all those doors I painted really triggered something inside. and I'm wanting to paint. I haven't put brush to canvas for the longest time and have felt the inner callings to get back to it. maybe it was working through all that resistance, but I'm sure that something has unblocked and I'm feeling inspired again.

you know how much I love drawing grayscale portraits and I draw most of these on paper. I've been trying to figure out how to create these on canvas. A while ago I tried gluing paper onto the canvas+ drawing into it and that worked to a certain degree, but it didn't quite toot my horn. So I grabbed one of the canvas's I had in my studio and began reworking it. with paint, gesso and pen.

Whilst working on her face that little critical voice piped up telling me 'its not working, give up.' I thanked it for sharing and called on all the positive messages I could to affirm my creative skills. it felt like a turning point. so glad I was consious of it + I worked my way through it. so pleased I did. ahh painting can be such an emotional process....

I love where this is going. I love that I'm repurposing a canvas. I love that it feels like there is a challenge to create around what's already there, some boundary lines I can fall into.maybe for the first time I can say I am loving + trusting the unknown....

From fashion graffiti to car graffiti.... and Smiggle. My 10yr loves Smiggle products and discovered liquid chalk. The day it arrived I took the package to school so she could open it up straight away. As soon as we got home from school, we couldn't wait to play. It was heaps of fun and the car windows were covered in artsy pics.... and so it progress inside to her bedroom mirrors.

After we cleaned it off, with dry paper towel (don't use it wet one omg!) I got the brilliant idea to write an affirmation on one of my back windows of the car.

I SO love that song, thanks Uncle Kracker. My 13 yr old was mortified that I'd written this on our car window, which made me love it all the more!

isn't this inspiring? I loved Shellie Argeanton's creations the minute I laid eyes on her creative fashion graffiti. Shellie uses gesso and and brilliant ink on magazine pages to create one off images.

What do I love about this?

that I haven't seen this done anywhere else before, thats its about transforming an already existing image, its about recycling and its just plain different and unique..

Another long weekend in Queensland and I was painting my heart. Not on a canvas, unfortunately, but sloggin’ it out in the garage. Do you remember these doors? Recycled from one on my hubby’s clients and they were lovingly made into cupboards for my studio.

It’s taken me a couple of months to find the motivation to paint them. Louver doors x 6! Undercoat + a couple of top coats. It was definitely a challenge for the mind to work through. But I pushed through the resistance and the excuses.There was no easy way out…just do it!

The kids had fun helping me paint for a while, our dog got a bindy spot or two and we were all tempted to give him a skunk stripe down his back.

The jobs complete and the doors look amazing and I’m giving myself a pat on the back for getting it done.Yep! Love my cupboards and beautiful white doors...

Believe in Your Journey

I’ve enjoyed my 3 days back in my art world this week. I do so love our kids but with them back at school this week I feel I can get to all the things that are vying for attention in my head.

‘Believe in your Journey’ emerged from my studio this week and I’m so thrilled to be able to offer prints of it on etsy with a couple of my other recent collage pieces.

Here’s the story… I was happily pulling things together for a photo shoot of my prints, something I love to do and reminds me of my time at Myer in the Visual Merchandising Dept. I’d actually finished taking photos and was putting everything back where it was when I saw all the ‘special stuff’ I had piled on one piece of furniture. It’s all important, special bracelet that was a gift, special necklace, a brooch passed down through family….. it was all special!

I decided that loads of special stuff doesn't make the space more special. It just becomes ‘stuff’. So I pared it down, tidied up and put away. My hubby would be so pleased. He is a minimalist, who loves clear lines and absolutely no clutter or collections. I have no doubt that living with me, the collector is a challenge…. one that we continually work on to make sure we are both happy.

So here is the after shot. And I love looking at this now. My new favourite print, my black velvet cylinder purse that I use to hold my jewelry, my special family brooch, my grandmas perfume bottle, my rings, my badge from the workshop I took with Laurie Mika ...

Now it feels clean and clear and I love that energy as I pass by it. Fresh eyes my friends, fresh eyes.

Today is an amazingly perfect day!

We have had a lovely Easter, we've been away, had some loving family stay with us and enjoyed school holidays.I've had some time off line with all that's been going on, with some computer challenges thrown into the mix. But we're all feeling refreshed, eaten huge amounts of chocolate and had a great time together, ready for the next adventure.

My day has started with the kids back at school, pouring rain that makes me feel SO creatively inspired and my computer is back and up to date with a new printer/scanner to learn how to use.

Today I am appreciating my creative space + my artsy world...and you?

Planning for success during school holis!

It’s coming up Easter and my 13 yr old and 10 yr old are on school holidays. I love the fact that I have the flexibility to be with them during school holis, but I do plan for it to be a success, so that everyone gets what they want.

I’ve found as they are now a bit older they are happy to do their own thing, they still want to play games (wii or something tech based) with me, watch movies with me (yes its been raining) or just be in my company. I love that they still want to hang with me, but I still need my own space. Our family doesn’t live any where nearby, and whilst the kids have friends they could go to, I’ve found they are happy to be home having some down time.

So here’s how I approach school holidays….

Plan very little creative work during this time. Really this alleviates frustration on my behalf and if an opportunity does arise that they have a day out with friends then I make the most of it with some planned project.
I do plan a ‘to do’ list where I’m ok with interruptions..
Set myself any due dates to be completed before holidays start
I also use this time to rejuvenate. Sleep in, hang in my pj’s for a morning, tidy up the studio…And I rejuvenate mentally too. It’s a great time to rethink and start mental prep for the next 2 months. Whilst these holidays are short, I’m using the energy to gain momentum to go full steam ahead when the kids return to school.
I do set up some time (like an hour or so) during the day to do priority things. As I’ve been around for the kids for the most part they are happy to let me do my thing.
I find during school holis that the inspiration may hit me during the middle of the night, like the night before. I got up and wrote for about 1hr and a half. Knowing I can have a bit of a sleep in the next day takes the pressure off and allows the words to flow.
I always ask them what’s on their list to do during holis. And what’s the one thing they’d most like to do, and make sure it happens. That way they feel like they get to do something cool and I know what’s a priority.

We’ve been away last weekend for a family function, this Easter weekend we have family staying with us and then the kids shall be back at school before they know it. With a few school projects to be completed in between the holidays are quickly marching by.

At this stage of our family it seems to be working …a wise friend said to me

“If you give your kids undivided attention for 10 minutes, they’ll give you half an hour of peace in return”.

So here’s to everybody getting what they want.

my creative motor has had an overhaul

I've given myself a few days off. some time at a slower pace. I've had a number of due dates to get things done and they are all up to date. In the last little while I've updated my etsy shop, my flickr page, reworked my bio, prepared info for Lia at OM and developed some new workshops. After these were all done and dusted I knew it was time to step back a little and catch my breath, recharge and renew.

I've been in the place of burnt out before. When I first started painting I took on doing 2 solo exhibitions, with new work for each, within 6months of each other. I walked away from my second solo feeling deflated and questioning if I was on the right path. That lead to some major soul searching that was all good, but I recognize the value of looking after myself and my creativity.

I've been having some r+r, chai lattes and white choc + macadamia cookies, sleeping more, time away from the computer, magazine browsing, long conversation with friends on the phone and journaling. Now I feel ready to kick this creative machine over again and get the wheels turning with a renewed focus and clear direction.

Burning your creative motor out just isn't worth it.And if you've experienced it you know what I'm talking about.. I've had my grease and oil change and am gearing up for some more exciting, stretching creative motoring.

Australian's and New Zealander's have recently endured Mother Natures distain, we know only too well the tugs at our hearts to do what we can to help.

Positive Talk ~ Inspiration Avenue

Today I'm focusing on the positive.... positive thoughts, positive self talk, positive outer talk. its easy to do when I'm feeling light and happy, but its more of a challenge when my spirit is feeling a little low, for no apparent reason. thats where I am in this moment. so what am I going to do about it? acknowledge it, be ok in it and then shift it the best way I know how. surround myself in my creativity, feel good stuff, create some journal pages and my low spirit won't have a choice but to move on.

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way from time to time...it happens to all of us at some point. and I feel inspired creatives are really sensitive to this energy. its important we look after ourselves, nurture our needs and be kind to ourselves. have some remedies up our sleeves to work through it instead of getting stuck. and that's also about self love...

Later on, my low spirit has lifted AND.....

I've had an inspired idea, I'd love to share with you.

How would it feel if you received uplifting images and perhaps a few inspired words in your inbox from time to time? Sometimes its easy to stay in my own little cocoon, but every emerging butterfly has to come out to the world at some time. I’m consciously making an effort to connect and be involved in things going on outside my studio, home and family. there always seems to be so much going on here! But when something really inspiring comes along, I love to jump in whole heartedly. this swap was one of those ( and there is another I’d love to share with you soon too!)

This was the Great Big Stitched Postcard Swap 3 was one of those. Organized so loving and efficiently by Beth Nicholls. And I received an amazing postcard created by Amanda from Seattle.

Amanda takes the most amazing video footage + photos. I’m always intrigued by other people’s artistic gifts and loved watching this clip. Amanda filmed the behind the scene doco of this music clip…living in the subtropics of Australia makes watching this snowy landscape all the more fascinating.And her photo's are Amazing.

I'm so grateful Amanda, huge thanks and I love your message .... and I got to create one for Pam who lives in Florida. I couldn't resist using my big haired girl, with lots of thready goodness hanging off. And there are more pics here

The last few weeks for me have been all about renewing, re-doing and realigning....yep its been a huge task where I've tackled most of my online sites and gave them a make over. I still have a bit of a list to finish...but I feel on track.Updating info, pics and labels. If your reading this post from a reader, like google or bloglines I encourage you to come take a look at my new banner and buttons. I am most pleased with my new look..... but the biggest task I took on was updating my etsy.

Descriptions, banner, labels, photo's, you name it... I've followed the info from the makeover series from the Etsy Team AND I've just added some new original drawing+ collages too. So maybe you might like to pop by my shop and take a look...I am super happy with it.

Lately I’ve been reminded about seeing the possibility in everything!

Here’s how the story goes…I am slowly making my way around twitter, thanks to some great information from Notes on Paper. You know I've mentioned Julie before... but truly she is a twitter angel from heaven! I've been putting into practice Julies pearls of wisdom, navigating the ins and outs of tweeting. And after finding Karen Chookooloonks Walrond ‘Different is Beautiful’ I decided to follow her on twitter. I got brave and replied to one of her tweets, I almost chickened out, but the voice in my heart encouragingly told me to “go for it”. The conversation was about wearing western boots when you’re not really that western but love them anyway. Last winter I feel in love with a pair of pink + brown cowgirl boots but they weren’t my size and not ‘that’ practical in the subtropics… and my tweet was along those lines.

Karen tweeted me back (truly I almost had to pick myself up off the floor, yes she tweeted me a message) saying that if they wear boots in Texas I could wear boots in Australia.

Lightbulb moment...but wait there is more....

And then a little twitter gem in an corner of this online world from Copper Leaf Studio….

embracing my past history

I love watching anything about collecting and vintage finds.The bower bird in my heart gets all fluttery. yes be still my beating heart.... Whilst watching The Best of the Collectors I was glued to the words from the founder of Mambo, an Australia surfwear company that's global. He'd been collecting pieces of Mambo designs since the biz began and talked about preserving and embracing the history of his artsy biz as it was the foundation of where they were today.

Like a lightening bolt, I got it.Let go of any embarrassment I may have had in the past and embrace my history, where I've been + what I've created. It is part of who I am as an artist, today..I was inspired to go through my blog of over 600 posts, 5 yrs worth and added labels to my post. I now feel proud and honored to share my history with you....and along the way I discovered these pics that I never shared.

This was one of my stint of in the Visual Merchandising team at Myer Depart store, 2006. I was employed to paint murals on the walls of a number of department areas.

Part of the brief for these jobs was that I would be ok with these murals being painted over if and when the designs changed. Its been a while since I've been into the store as we have moved away from the area. But the fact remains, I did an amazing job, loved creating something on this scale.The store manager got great feedback from the state manager.... they were the best murals he'd seen in any of the Queensland stores...

so why would I want to hide history like that? not any more.

Guide Me- Inspirational Avenue

a bit of a story to share, but its worth the read!

Last night I woke at midnight with a thumping headache. It wasn’t from one to many wines, lord knows I wanted one or two, or from stress or anything logical. Maybe I put the voodoo on myself….before going to be I proclaimed to my hubby that I was sick of the heat, sick of feeling sweaty, sick of being thirsty, sick of drinking soooo much water that I have to go to the bathroom all the time…

I think you get the picture. So when I woke with a head ache, I thought “serves myself right. Just get on with it, its not going to last forever.” I took some headache pain relief, which I almost never do. I like to think + believe that my body can heal itself, but I just wasn’t up for the pain this time round.

I woke this morning to the sound of rain. Beautiful, calming rain. I gave away my 5am rising and stayed in bed and just listened to the rain. So grateful it was a little cooler, even just for a few hours.

This frustration has not only come from the weather. I’ve been retaking product photos and updating descriptions, which was fun at first. But I’m so over it. Yes Inner Rebel I hear you!!

Hoping back on the horse today to get this project finished I detoured a little into blog land. a little time out doesn’t hurt right?…. Where I discovered Kylie Johnson, at Instinct + Grace ; an amazing ceramic artist and poet who is selling to Anthropology. So what’s the big deal?….she’s Australian!

This fuels my fire. It encourages me to push through those times when I’m feeling hot and sweaty, to push through the boredom of the tedious, it encourages me to think “if she can do it so can I”.

So that’s where I’m at, knowing that the rewards do come with effort, knowing that what I’m doing is worthwhile, knowing that my Inner Rebel can go crazy after this project is finished, that I can turn the fan on and sing into it like the kids do, till I’m happy to come back to the computer and that Self Discipline is challenging but also rewarding….and just maybe I might indulge my cravings for spanakopita, chocolate and a journal page!.

learning to love consistency..

Being consistent is a real challenge for me. I get bored with routine and rules and just want to buck the system. You just ask my kids, I’m sure they’d say that mum makes the rules and doesn’t stick to them, or she just ‘plain old’ forgets them….. and they know they can bend me very easily. Certainly doesn’t make mothering an easy job when I’m the one wanting to break all the rules.

This relates to my biz too…I’ve been doing loads of research lately on branding. And I’m aware that I’m really drawn to biz’s that have strong identity, strong consistency. That’s where I want to be. But how do I do that if I feel challenged by being consistent? What comes across if I’m not consistent is a scattering of STUFF. Not a pretty sight. And explains why I have never wanted to settled down into one artsy medium.

I have learnt the hard way in the past that the only true freedom is freedom within the boundaries. And funny enough consistency brings with it its own freedom. It’s a different sort of freedom…one where I know how far I can push the boundaries, a safe freedom where I know that its not going to back fire in my face.

So as challenging as it is, I am learning to embrace consistency and rhythm and my own personal rules…this feels like a tough one, but I know it shall have its rewards…although I’m not sure if the kids will agree on this one!

you all know how much I've loved my white floral OKA.b thongs....yes its been a true love affair + well they have been the perfect thing to wear in the sub tropics. I love that they are so much more than just a thong. they are feminine + floral and whilst l'd love to be wearing lace up ankle boots with my floral dresses, its just too darn hot...

Here's my new pick, Bridget is going to be my new gal pal.... yes we are coming into Autumn here in Australia, but really I've been wearing my thongs for 9 months out of 12. can't believe I've had my thongs since 2008!

Found these guys have a blog and have loved perusing the behind the scenes fashion shots...these thongs are 100% recycled, got to love that too!

I'm stopping for a moment. to take it all in. to celebrate the moment that I'm in. some doors are opening in such a self expanding way that a little fear is creeping into my enthusiastic spirit.

this post here by tracey could have been written by my heart, for its exactly how I'm feeling...I too have some 'big' things in the pipeline. things I've dreamt, wished, journaled about for the longest time. and as they are happening, I am taking small steps, letting my heart know its all going to be ok and that I can let go of the self doubt.

today has been one of those days were resolutions, rhymes and reasons why's have been popping into my head and into my being. aha's in a string full....answers to questions that I have been asking for a long time, have made themselves known. and finally getting it. on all levels.

its brought me to a place where I'm filling ok about where I've been + the amount of time its taken. I'm being ok with being in my own space. Owning it. Stepping up into it. Loving that space and what it has taught me. Being grateful...

One of the articles I read that lead me to questioning my Self was this...and this qu popped right off the page. Why am I proud of my [product] Art? I picked up a pen + logically I thought it would be a struggle, but this is what flowed out....(uncensored + a little repetitive, but hey I was in the flow!)

its taken me years of practice, self discovery + inner searching, patients + determination
its the truth of my Self expression
its the thing that most express who I am
I truly feel connected to all that is possible when I create
it feels my heart with joy
art is the place that is self accepting, loving + reflective. like a true friend who never questions why
i feel so deeply that it is who I am + that I am art
we are undeniably inseparable
it makes my heart flutter with joy + excitement

my whole being is swelling with possibility, from the inside out. if my art inspired me to feel this way I'd love to share that with you...so you too can feel it from + in your heart.

bookshelf makeover

this bookshelf was made about 15yrs ago by my very skilled cabinet maker hubby.it was in our spare room before we were parents and then in our sons room..it was a design we saw on a Better Homes+ gardens and I gave it a very astral theme ....do you remember when the stars, moon + sun motifs were really popular? thats the decor we had in the room.

Now its made its way into my studio + I love it in my space. I do have a thing for white furniture + am working towards creating that in my space...it took countless coats of paint to go over the blue.

But I love that I can use it for my books AND treasures.

let me guide you through some of my bookshelf goodies... my all time favourite novel 'Watership Down' I read it when I was at highschool and loved it sooo much I learnt how to play the theme song on the electric organ (they were popular instruments in the '80's) still makes my heart flutter, my rune stones and a beautiful mixed media piece from Lucy.

heart shaped coral from the beach in a vintage glass. some collected shells that are all the same kind + a rainbow canvas painting my daughter created.

my first ever glazed teapot.we were on holidays one year when our son was little + I was in much need of some time out. I went to a ceramic shop and glazed this teapot. most happy with the outcome. and a cup I made from paper clay.there used to be a whole set, but unfortunately the other pieces didn't fair to well over the years.

some red glass beads, a minature painting from my dear friend Maryika, a long life candle I won and a Tibetan clearing bell from my feng shui girlfriend. i use this a lot if there is any yukky energy about in the house.

more shells. these all have holes in them ready to be wrapped or woven into something, in a bowl I glazed. yellow buttons in a vintage glass and a journal I made up with my own rhyme + reason after not getting into one of DJ's journal making workshops here in Australia.

yes another teapot with a crocheted doily. it pours the best tea.

and on the bottom shelf volumes of arty stuff, photo albums of my art, newspaper articles I've featured in and my perceptive astrology notes.

all things dear to my heart. my studio is definitely a work in progress, one step at a time, but I love how this has all come together.

a pressie for a special friend

I love to make presents for my friends birthdays. there is something special that happens when I create a gift to give. maybe its the unbridled emotion + affection, maybe its the freedom of allowing what ever to come up because I know they are going to love it regardless, or maybe its a sense of playfulness + unlimitedness. I always feel incredibly fulfilled after....its a great filling up of my soul.

this pressie is going to a very special arty friend who's having a special number birthday celebration. I got this in the post today for her. I know she won't be here to peek. She'll be busy planing + making for her fancy dress party, Cowboys + Indians (truly she is the events Queen. you should see what she does for her kids parties!) I'm sorry I won't be there, but I'm sure it will definitely be a blast!!

my palette with a yellow/orange wipe

things are taking shape a little differently here... yellow is starting to creep into my artwork. thats a good thing as I've never really been too fond of yellow.bright yellow. but it feels like its here for me to try. to see how it fits into my palette of blues, greens + pinks. to embrace my yellowness....

I'm seeing how other things are fitting in too. new things that i have never done before.or even tried to do. like drawing up a schedule. omgosh...I used to cringe at that word. my resistance was always huge! and my resentment for having to stick to my own time was off the Richter scale.even without a schedule. so I get that this is a monumental shift for me. to even contemplate it. I am being kind to myself, putting in a sprinkling of self rewards and a splash of color....I've just started my second week and found google calendar quite friendly (thanks Amy for the suggestion). scheduling was something that was suggested in Kelly Rae's Flying Lessons. my suggestion is do it when you feel ready and open to giving it a good chance, or else it shall well and truly be flicked to the wall.

My other newness is happily waking at 5am and spending an hour with myself. for myself. on myself. by myself. reading, exercising, taking care of myself....and its awesome. has taken quite a bit of self discipline to get there though, but I know I am worth it.

my other omgosh is that I'm creating a biz plan. yep its true. I'm working my way through The Creative Entrepreneur. again taking quite a bit of self discipline but I'm getting there.

and helping me along the way are these books. this one in the morning. and this one in any spare minute I have.

that phrase keeps popping into my head..

if you always do what you've always done then you'll always get what you always got.

so here I am at my front door, welcoming you into my home with my fluffy slippers on. yep its the middle of summer and it is bizarre that I have my sheep skin slippers on, put there is a reason in my madness. always is isn't there?

a few days ago I read this post at Cypress Sun Jewelry (I do love to visit Amy!) about Imperfect Blogging. I was inspired to shared with her a recent aha moment I had about conversations + blogging. how I understand there needs to be a balance of light and shade in all things, not just in art but in words, in conversations + in blogging.

"I had a light bulb moment a couple of weeks ago I'd like to share... Recently I visited a dear-to-my-heart girl friend. Most of our conversations are deep and meaningful, always helpful + loving, sharing of stories where we both come away feeling some amazing resolution from our discussion. I felt this visit was not like that at all. it had a different tone, with conversation about things in general. maybe it was because her children+ hubby were involved in the conversation...but I came away feeling like we hadn't connected.

What I realized later was that we HAD connected and that not ALL our conversation has to be empowering, intense or problem solving. it can just BE. and I felt like I had got to know part of her on a different level... and I "got" that my blogging can be the same. it doesn't always have to be profound, it can just be....and maybe this is a side of me my readers haven't seen yet, a side that I am now happy to share because this is the real me too.....like opening the door to visitors with my slippers on!"

and there was a moment of relaxed ease. that its ok to talk about everyday stuff, because that is part of who I am and who we are as artists, bloggers, creators. Being profound all the time can be too intense and a lot of self pressure ...I'm wanting to welcome some fun and good feelings when I blog + read. And I love visiting other blogs that get this too. Like this Red Tshirt post! it just makes me want to smile.....

School goes back tomorrow. And I am looking forward to having my days back to myself. Don’t get me wrong, I love school holidays + having the kids around, but 7 weeks is a long time, especially when its been raining on and off. they are even looking forward to getting back to school. I figure this means they have had a good holiday and are truly ready + enthused about the year ahead. I did manage to have moments in my studio and with a new resolution in hand… its a biggy and really I had little idea on where to start other than just to start.

I began exploring some techniques that I love playing with.seemed like a good place to start..

school memories

my daughter and I have be creatively busy this week, getting her school supplies ready for the new year at school. she is definitely the organized one. possibly takes after her dad in that department....but I am getting better I must say. as we were covering books, labeling pencils and figuring out how and where to put labels on odd things that strangely needed to be labelled, I remember how much time and effort I put into covering my own folders when I was at high school.

loved the mixed media images even then!

I can remember spending days cutting out pictures from my Dolly magazines, taping them down and then covering them with contact.

I dug this one out, I think it was my Year 12 Textile folder...and maybe one of the least covered with pics. Truly I was happy when I all of the folder covered with colour and images. and I'm sure mum was pleased that I was occupied with this task for so long. then I'd be on to covering my pencil tin with pics, which was usually a rectangular bisc tin from Xmas..

my son is not the least bit interested in labeling his supplies, but he is off to high school this year and maybe its just not a priority for him. the end of 7 weeks holidays have come around quick, but the kids and I are both ready!

it all counts....

She is a gentle spirit from Ireland who I met through Kelly Rae's Flying Course. We have had some soulful conversations via email and I'm thrilled for this piece to wing its way to Ireland..... I am also thrilled with the loving donations. Thank you to those who emailed me with their heartfelt stories, how they have been touched by the spirit of giving what they can. Thank you, thank you...

Hervey Bay beach after the floods.

yes this is our beloved beach. the water is the same colour as the sand.....we went for a family walk along the Pier today. usually the pier is filled with people fishing, men, women and children. not today. the flood waters coming down the river have changed the sparkling blue water to a muddy brown.its great the flood waters are going somewhere, but I won't be swimming here for a while...maybe I'll wait for our blue ocean to return.it just doesn't feel the same...

after having a chat to my well informed weather/ocean loving hubby I found out its going to be a great thing for the under water environment. the mud and silt filters out to the ocean and the coral will feed on it. the coral will grow and the fish shall be happy.... the coral reefs live on!

yes yes always a silver lining.

In everything there is a silver lining. In everything there is an opportunity to learn something about yourself.... I've been asking myself what it is I've learnt from the floods that have + still are effecting so much of Queensland.....

Personally I haven't been directly effected by the flood waters. Our families are all safe, homes in tact. Apart from knowing that the groceries in the local supermarkets were thinning out, freshfruit + vegy may be a bit scarce for a while (my 13yr old thinks thats great!) life has continued as per normal.I had a well stocked pantry + petrol in the car. That's thanks to the intuition of my hubby + me being wise enough to listen + act on his advice.

One thing that has been ringing loud + true through these times is connection. Connecting with family, friends + neighbors.Making a very conscious effort to see that all was ok. Often I have my head down in my own life + I forget to connect with others...

My mum said she's has had calls from people she's been trying to contact for years, from our home state of Victoria. Suddenly they have come out of the woodwork....

For me, the lesson in this is all about connecting more often. to take the action to call or write when I have a moment.and to stay connected. to make the time. it's important.

I have no doubt that the floods have brought alot of emotions for many...I would encourage you to look within and see whats going on for you.fear, loss, lack, or maybe its about being part of a great community, sharing what you have.

believe me..... it IS an opportunity to look within.

hearts in action

the devastation of the floods has really hit Queensland. unexpectedly. yesterday flash floods went through Toowoomba...some of our family + friends were right in the thick of the flood waters.thankfully they are all present and accounted for......thankfully the Universe was watching over them.

we've already seen so much of the flood waters on tv. there is so much water in so many places its hard not to be watching. it does get to a point where we switch off, literally, to look after our own spirit or stitch off in our heads and go on with life as usual.

Today I'm asking you to put your hearts into action. yes stitch off the news if its disturbing + overwhelming but don't switch off your heart. Truly Queensland + its people need a lot of love.Many, many towns have been effected and if we can send a little love, physically, emotionally, spiritually it can make a difference.

So what action am I asking you to take?

Every time you hear about the flooding in Queensland instead of going into pity, fear, sadness or whatever it brings up for you, send some love from your heart. See it energetically reaching the Sunshine state and spreading to all those who need it. Like attracts like and the power of love can do amazing things.

not so sunny...

the sunshine state of Queensland has not been so sunny of late.....so much rain, both inland and along the coast.flood waters beyond belief. we've had our fair share of rain and many neighboring towns now have roads cut.....could last for a number of days or more. water levels are still rising as high as 2o metres, some towns are preparing for their second lot of flood waters. there has been so much water so quickly.

its even been in my dreams.

its Xmas school holidays here and we had many family trips planned, but as they were unnecessary trips we cancelled and stayed home. a small break in the weather provided an opportunity for a quick trip to Toowoomba (a 4hr drive) to see our new niece. she is SO gorgeous. but the rain began to fall...

I got a call while we were there, from a Uni girlfriend who was trying to make her way back up north (they too were on a family trip). in everything there is always a silver lining. we had a fun filled spontaneous hour together. felt like I was 18 again.

My hubby is a weather buff. always has been. he has the ability to read weather charts and know what it all means. heeding his advise we decided to come home early and go the long way home as some roads were already closed. true to form we arrived home safely. if we'd left it any later we would have been stranded.

I'm so grateful that I've had the ability to chose what to let go of. Much clearing out has been going on here over the last few weeks. many families + biz have not had that choice with flood waters taking everything...there is much gratitude + compassion in my heart today.

Last Day for BuBu!

yes folks, this is the last day you'll be able to visit BuBu Blossom's website. 4th of Jan sees this part of my art biz coming to a close....cards are a great price $3.95. My printer in Sydney has closed her biz so I'm not sure at this stage if I'll be doing cards like this in the near future. Once the site closes the cards shall be around the $5 price at my Nic Hohn website.

so it is truly a great time to get organized for the coming year and stock up on cards.you'll have that perfect card ready to go just when you need it.

i woke this morning with a new feeling in my heart. one of hope and belief. belief in myself and what 2011 holds for me. i don't recall feeling this kind of self belief for a long time. it feels like confidence + a deep knowing rolled into one....and you? what does 2011 hold for you?
